pameladlloyd: Alya, an original character by Ian L. Powell (moon and stars)
I'm gacking the following link, as I found the article very interesting: An Article About Terry Pratchett. Plus, I want to see the movie mentioned within the article.

Although our summer monsoon season officially started earlier this week (I'm not sure of the exact date), this was based on the dewpoint, and not on rainfall. It's also two or three weeks earlier than we're used to, but I understand this is supposed to be due to a change in the definition, rather than a change in the weather pattern.

All that said, we had a real thunder-boomer with heavy rainfall earlier this afternoon. One effect was the wonderful cooling of the air, which was suddenly much cooler than the air in the house, encouraging us to open doors and windows. The other is that our backyard now contains an immense, muddy puddle. Which means that every time the dogs come back in again after being let out, we shall have muddy floors. I'm so glad I insisted on replacing the carpet with tile when I moved into this house.

My eldest stepson and I stood for a while at the back door, watching the rain come down and the puddle rise to the edge of the concrete slab that forms the base of our porch. As he is involved in computer game programming and design, we discussed the way water is portrayed in computer games, both how motion is applied and the colors that water is typically given in game worlds. Water in a CG context is normally going to have a lot of blue in it, which is congruent with the fact that bodies of water in the real world reflect the sky, which typically tints them blue. But, the water in our yard was mostly muddy brown, because (surprise!) there was a lot of mud mixed into and kept stirred up by the rain, and because the highlights from the sky were more gray, than blue.
