pameladlloyd: Alya, an original character by Ian L. Powell (library stairs)

I have been trying to get caught up on my friends' journals (I fell a bit behind during my recent adventures) and in the process of following a link in a recent post by [livejournal.com profile] domynoe's discovered The Gender Genie which attempts to determine the sex of an author, based on an analysis of text written by that author.

I submitted my last two posts as a test. The first one (the most recent), was identified as being written by a female, but the post before that was identified as being written by a male.

Hmm. I don't think P*** changed my sex when he gave me an ass's head.

I just tried this out on a story I've been working on, which has passages that vary between a woman's POV, and a man's POV filtered through a woman's perceptions. The overall story is identified as having been written by a woman, while the sections written from the second POV are identified as having been written by a man, but with a score that hovers near neutral.

The whole thing seems to be based upon how often men and women use specific words, such as "with," "not," and "where" (all female), and "the," "around," and "who"(all male). It's pretty bizarre to think that the frequency of such simple, common words, which we all use, can be indicative of our sex.

With four long blog posts, it gave me three females and an "unknown" (for scoring 601 on each side). Uh, nope. And I tried a passage from one of Ralph Waldo Emerson's essays. Female.

Clearly, it doesn't work.

LOL.

I just got back from reading your bio (since I certainly can't tell from someone's writing style what sex they are). Double-lol.

But, this may give you an advantage in creating believable female characters. :)
