pameladlloyd: Alya, an original character by Ian L. Powell (Alya)

All that rumaging around with photographs, however frustrated my search might have been, meant a chance to revive a few memories. (And, in some cases, to look blankly at pictures with me in them and wonder why I couldn't remember the event.) If you want more information about the images, just click; they're fully annotated in my gallery.

Btw--my new icon is based on my son's art. He emailed me the image and I promptly informed him I was going to make an icon from this. He agreed, although I think he was a bit bemused. :)

North Garden, VA (just South of Charlottesville), near Christmas after a big snow:

My younger son, Keith, at ages about two, seven, and twelve, give or take a year:

It was so comforting to read that. I thought it was just me!

I'm glad it comforted someone! :)

It's funny how some things seem etched in our memories, whether we've got photos, or not, while others just slip away.

Great avi! All steampunk and mechi-girl and anime (late 60's-early 70's, like Galaxy Railway or Speed Racer and such), all rolled together! He did a nice job (and so did you: nice cropping).

Is Keith the artist?

. . . why is his hair spotted in that school picture??

My older son, Ian, is the manga/anime-style artist. He's uber-critical of his own work and told me he didn't like the way this image turned out, so he's planning on drawing her again. It's cool that you saw the steampunk in that; when I saw it, knowing that the character is related to a story he's been working on and is not from our contemporary world, I asked why she was wearing sun glasses, to which he replied that those were aviator's goggles. :-)

Keith is my extrovert and loves attention. He also loves cheetahs. The hairdresser, despite our bringing in reference pictures, didn't quite manage to make the spots cheetah-y enough. But, it was still fun, as his dye-job was uniquely his.

Oh, and Ian did the cropping, before he e-mailed me the image. All I did was shrink it down to avi size. :)

What is it with "steampunk"? This is the third time in three days that I've heard that term, all in completely different contexts, which I swear I've never heard before...

I'm not an expert, but "Steampunk" is a term which I first encountered in respect to fiction, in which the setting was near the beginning of our modern technological era, often (but not always) Victorian, but with fantastic or science fictional elements (or both). Often, the aesthetic is similar, imho, to that of the works of Jules Verne. It's become quite popular recently among costumers , possibly due to a number of Anime or Manga stories with that setting and aesthetic. There are also a number of people who love to take modern objects and tinker with them to give them that early technological feel (lots of gears, brass, and leather).
