pameladlloyd: Alya, an original character by Ian L. Powell (reading)

Yeah, that's right, this site is an advertisement for a book: Kandide the Secret of the Mists by Diana S. Zimmerman, the first in a series, which I found by clicking an advertising link at The Edge of the Forest, an online magazine about children's literature. It's got a fun flash animation, blurbs by fairytale and literary characters, lots of cool animated graphics, an online game, and more. I think this site is really cool and if I ever publish a book for kids I want whoever put this site together to put one together for my book.

Finally got to look at it--wow! There's a lot going on there. Kids would probably love it--I was distracted by the way the characters looked: artistically, how the artist designed them to look like modern-day people of certain ages and types, but with the air of fairy-ness. Then I had to stop looking because these days my computer overheats when I try to do anything too graphic intense. But it did seem like the site had a *lot* for kids.

I was okay with the artwork. I think each age has its own approach to these things.

Then I had to stop looking because these days my computer overheats when I try to do anything too graphic intense.

Ooh! My sympathies. If you have a friend or family member who's sufficiently technophilic, you might want to see if your computer has the ability to step up the fan when the temperature goes up. Mine apparently does, although that didn't help my recent computer woes.*
If it's not something that can be dealt with simply, try to have it looked at. Overheating is not good for your computer and I know you don't want to lose your work. (I try to do regular backups of my writing folders, but they're never as up to date as they should be.)

My computer, which was still under warranty, thank goodness, died at the beginning of December, due to an apparent surge, even though it was plugged into a UPS. The motherboard, which had an integrated graphics chip, was replaced, but I kept having problems with graphics and games that would kill it dead. Problems that weren't showing up on the stress test and other diagnostics done at the store. Eventually, after months of dragging the computer in to no avail, I had to push and the machine was sent to a more robust facility and came back with yet another motherboard. Since then (knock on wood/plastic/etheric substances) I've had no further problems. I can even play WoW, again.

*shudder*

You've inspired me to do a backup tonight.

My husband is pretty technophilic. He activated a little thermometer thingie that lets me see how hot the computer's getting, and so far the temp. goes back down if I just leave off the graphic-intense activity--but it's a drag, because it makes me nervous about watching YouTube videos (which I used to like to do).

I'll mention what you said about the fan--maybe that's something that would help. I love my computer... it's the first computer I've actually loved, rather than thought of as a semi-enemy.

Thank you!

WOW! I am so flattered. Thank you for the very kind kind comments. www.kandide.com is getting great traction and the people seem to really love all the games and the book trailer.

We are updateing it to have even more fun activities.
