I've been working on a website for our local science fiction convention, TusCon. The old site had become outdated, so my goal is to bring the site up-to date, make it more user-friendly, and add some spiffy new graphics.

I've already designed a new logo for the group that organizes and runs the con, BASFA, the Baja Arizona Science Fiction Association, but I haven't figured out what I'd like for the logo design for the con itself. I may update one of the old logos, as one of our local artists did a number of them--I'm not sure, but there may actually be one for each year. For the website graphics, I want to combine images that reflect fantasy, science fiction, and horror themes, then wrap it all up with a little bit of Steampunk sensibility. Whether my artistic skills are really up to this is just a bit questionable.

I've also been trying to keep up my writing, although that's going a bit more slowly than I'd like. I have one story that's almost ready to send off, but I need to figure out if any of the feedback I recently recieved will have an impact on the story. (Ian dragged me off to meet with his writing group last weekend. Unfortunately, I found them far more interested in sitting around and talking about world-building and things they'd written from any time during their lives than the recent past. I enjoyed hanging out with them, but was a bit frustrated with the lack of focus.)

All of this has kept me pretty busy, especially since I have a few loose ends I want to tie up for some other projects, so I haven't been posting much, nor have I been keeping up with my flist as I'd like to. My apologies to anyone who has posted important news that I've missed.

I've just spent a couple of hours searching for a photograph--not online, but in my own collection of photographs. You see, I'm working on a graphic image for a website I'm building for our local science fiction convention. After consultation with the con comm, we decided we wanted an image that incorporated elements of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. (This was based on a couple of sample images I showed them, but requires all new artwork.)

In order to complete the scene I want to include an image of a woman in a long dress, facing away from the camera and standing in the prow of a boat heading toward the center of the image. Oh, and I don't know that I'll be able to pull this off, but I'd love to have skeletons swimming in the water next to the boat.

I had no, have! a photo, in which I am wearing a flamenco dress and staring out a window. I wanted to crop the photo, so I could position the figure in the prow of a boat. (I'm not sure how well that would turn out and I don't know where I'm going to get the boat image as I haven't found the right image in either my photos or public domain, or if I'm going to have to try to draw the boat, but I hope I can make it work, somehow.)

Unfortunately, the album in which the photograph was stored was not in its usual place and is nowhere to be found. So, I went through the boxes and boxes of duplicate prints and other photos that never made it into albums, but although I found many wonderful memories, I didn't find the photo I was looking for. In fact, all my photos from Spain are missing. :(

They will turn up again. Just not right now, it would seem.

I'm over at my sons' house, waiting for the AC guy to show up. Thank goodness we got appliance insurance when we bought the house, or we'd never be able to afford the repairs.

This morning before I settled down to work I watched Act II of Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. Plus, I watched Act I with Ian, since he'd ignored my email telling him about the show. *hmph!* I think he's hooked, now, though. *g*

Despite distracting myself this way--and sitting in a room where at one point two different young men were watching The Daily Show (presumable on YouTube, although I didn't ask) at different points in the same show--I have managed to write over a thousand words today and to finish the "first" draft of one of the stories I've been working on.

It's a retelling of a familiar fairytale. Sometimes, I worry that there are too many writers doing this kind of stuff, but the fairies have gotten a strong hold on me and keep insisting that this is what I should work on. ;>

I've also taken advantage of being over here to talk to Ian about some of the changes I'm making to my tech writing professional website, for which he is doing the graphics. I think it's going to look pretty snazzy when it's done.

Hi, All! I haven't been posting much as I've been busy putting together a new writerly webpage, as my existing page is slanted toward my technical writing persona. My next task will be to update the old technical-writing-persona website. I'm thinking of renaming the old site and snagging that site name for my new fiction-writer site, as I think it works better there and I've come up with something I think will work for my corporate-type persona. Besides improving the look and feel of my website, one of my primary goals is to bring them up-to-date in terms of HTML and CSS, so they are compliant with today's standards.

One small annoyance that came up as I was putting together links to my various online presences (I'm on LinkedIn, GoodReads, and Elance, in addition to LiveJournal): I was going to have a section on my Links page for each of these and with the single exception of LiveJournal, all of these sites offer "widgets," which are in this context, icons linked to my identity within that site, that I can place on my webpage. I wanted a similar widget for LiveJournal, but my searches through the LJ support pages have turned up nothing. I tried googling for an LJ widget, but all I got were either widgets for other sites, designed to be added to LJ, or widgets that will stream random LJ news, and similar stuff. It seems strange to me that there isn't a dedicated LJ widget. After all, all I'd need would be an image of the LJ pencil with a link back to my site. I could even create one myself, but I hesitate to use the LJ pencil icon without explicit permission from LJ. Am I missing something (which is probably really obvious), or is this something LJ just doesn't do?

Note: I've submitted a question to LJ Support, but as there are over 1000 open questions (over 700 unanswered), I don't expect an answer in the very near future.
