Does anyone out there know anything about NewFiction? What kind of reputation do they have? Tom Lopilato, their Marketing Director, posted a notice in the LinkedIn? Science Fiction Link Exchange group that they are looking for science fiction stories.

Their publishing model is a bit unusual and when I requested more information, Mr. Lopilato sent me an "Author Presentation," rather than the more standard submission guidelines. According to this document, they sent subscribers stories one chapter at a time for free, or in their entiretly for $5.00, with a full 50% of that going to the author. The document doesn't mention the terms of the publication agreement.

Since I don't have any completed novel-length work, and that seems to be what they're looking for, this is mostly curiosity on my part, but I do admit to being a bit intrigued.

I don't know anything about that publisher, but I would love to not be so intimidated by LinkedIn. Any advice?

Jump right in! I was invited by my technical writing and knowledge engineering colleagues from AOL, when their entire department was offshored a couple of years ago. At the time, I knew nothing about it and joined mainly so I could stay in touch with them. But, I've found it helps me to create a very professional online presence (as apposed to my somewhat scattered and quirky presence, here *g*).

What in particular concerns you? If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. :)

Well, see, that's the main problem. I don't know anyone there, and I don't have any idea how to create a professional presence (which I could use to market myself) there. What sort of thing do you do to make yourself known among people who do the same sort of work you do if you don't know them to start with?

I'll be happy to send you a LinkedIn invitation, to help you get started, and if you have any questions once you've signed up, I'd be honored to assist you. Let me know your first and last names, and the email address you want to use, and I'll issue the invitation; you can send them to me at pdlloyd @ gmail.com, if you prefer not to post them.

Hi Pema, I know nothing of that publisher, but I've applied to join the SF group and I've also asked to link with you on LinkedIn. I hope that's OK!

Oh, that's wonderful! I'd love to be linked with you. :)

If it comes to that, anyone else who's thinking of it, I'd love to be linked to any of my LJ friends.

I'll try Inviting you both over on LI. :)

And I'll ID myself via mail here, so you know it's me. *g*
