I watch very little television most of the time, but I made an exception tonight for Whedon's new series premiere for Dollhouse. I find that I'm still sitting on the fence. Certainly, the reviews are mixed. Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

I agree completely. Should we start our email campaign with Fox, or with Whedon?

Hmm. Perhaps we should just CC them both.

I'm reserving judgement. Not sure. Love Eliza Dushku, but she seems too "knowing" for the kind of blank slate she's supposed to be representing. Great to see the "mutant enemy" signature, though :)

I was not impressed. But I'm not the target audience for this show, which became abundantly evident early on. I came to Whedon from Firefly, not being a Buffy fan, and I doubt I'll go out of my way to watch it again.

I was surprised to find myself a Buffy fan, since I typically eschewed horror prior to getting hooked on the show and my first reaction when I stumbled across it by accident was that it all seemed pretty silly. I still haven't seen all of Firefly, as it was already off the air by the time I even learned about it. I need to borrow the series and watch it, but finding the time is something of an issue.

Television is a bit of a goblin market, I think.

I didn't watch Buffy when it was on the air because I really don't like vampires (which has become problematic over the last few years, because I do like paranormal romance and the percentage of paranormal romance that involves vampires is ridiculous [sigh]). Since I still feel that way, I've never had the urge to watch the DVDs, either.

I missed Firefly when it was on the air, too, but I checked the DVDs out of the library after hearing about it, and wound up buying them (and the DVD of Serenity) because I liked them so much.

Goblin market? I know the reference is to a poem, but I'm not familiar enough with the poem in question to understand the reference.

Goblin Market (http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/crossetti/bl-crossetti-goblin.htm) by Christina Rossetti tells the story of two girls the goblins attempt to lure to taste the fruit they sell. Eating fairy food has consequences, among them an addiction that makes mortal food taste like ashes. So, by comparing television to goblin fruit (a metaphor that could be applied to many aspects of our modern technological lives), I'm suggesting that it's easy for us to become addicted to shows that may be lacking in any substance that might sustain us.

Meh. I had hoped to enjoy it more than I did.

That was also the basic consensus of the others who watched it.

Yes, I think that sums it up pretty well. I wanted to enjoy it more than I actually did. I'm still hoping that they'll find some way to breathe some life into the story, but it's tempered by the disappointment I've already experienced.
