I watch very little television most of the time, but I made an exception tonight for Whedon's new series premiere for Dollhouse. I find that I'm still sitting on the fence. Certainly, the reviews are mixed. Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

I didn't watch Buffy when it was on the air because I really don't like vampires (which has become problematic over the last few years, because I do like paranormal romance and the percentage of paranormal romance that involves vampires is ridiculous [sigh]). Since I still feel that way, I've never had the urge to watch the DVDs, either.

I missed Firefly when it was on the air, too, but I checked the DVDs out of the library after hearing about it, and wound up buying them (and the DVD of Serenity) because I liked them so much.

Goblin market? I know the reference is to a poem, but I'm not familiar enough with the poem in question to understand the reference.

Goblin Market (http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/crossetti/bl-crossetti-goblin.htm) by Christina Rossetti tells the story of two girls the goblins attempt to lure to taste the fruit they sell. Eating fairy food has consequences, among them an addiction that makes mortal food taste like ashes. So, by comparing television to goblin fruit (a metaphor that could be applied to many aspects of our modern technological lives), I'm suggesting that it's easy for us to become addicted to shows that may be lacking in any substance that might sustain us.
