I love the color combination, although unfortunately the stockings didn't even survive the photo shoot, so we'll have to figure out what he'll do in the future.
He found some gorgeous wine-colored brocade at the discount fabric store, along with some gold satin lining material and vinyl for the soles, and has already started on another pair in his quest to perfect the shoe pattern. When I pouted because he wasn't doing a pair for me he explained that he didn't want to make me a pair that would instantly fall apart. However, when he came in just now to show me his progress, he conceded that he thinks he has enough for a second pair and might conceivably make me some to match his. Won't we be quite the sight as we stroll the Renn Faire?
Costuming is something I'd love to do, but just don't have the time. More precisely, there are lots of other things that I want to do as well and there are only so many hours in the day and days in the week.
Thanks! I've made a very few, very fast costumes, mostly for Halloween, but I've never attempted shoes. I love the colors, too.
I also REALLY like the picture you have here at the top with the masked women in the trees...
Thank you! This is an illustration of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, which is one of my favorite fairy tales. You can get more information about the layout from this post (http://pdlloyd.livejournal.com/64066.html). I just did a search (which I should have done before) and learned that the illustrator is Errol Le Cain. You can see more illustrations from the book here (http://www.michaelspornanimation.com/splog/?p=454). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Errol_Le_Cain) ()
Any chance of getting the pattern? I don't do costuming, but I'd make a variation of these for house slippers since I can't find anything that fits and this old house is drafty and COLD.
If you don't mind spending the big bucks, this company has an astounding variety of tights.
My husband made the pattern he's using specifically to fit his feet, but you can see the basic pattern and how to create your own at Poor People's Poulaines (http://www.virtue.to/articles/poulaines.html). I've also got a brief description of the process Karl followed near the bottom of my post Of Costumes and Such (http://pdlloyd.livejournal.com/64574.html). Karl adapted the pattern to add the extra detailing that makes this more of an elf's slipper and he found that he needed to add about half an inch, or even three-quarters of an inch, all the way around the perimeter to have a comfortable amount of give. It's taken him a couple of tries to get everything right.
Thank you so much for the link to Sock Dreams (http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/socks_cat_CategoryID_61.php). You should have heard me squealing as I saw one pair after another of tights I liked (mostly for myself). I can just see him in a pair of the jester's tights (which is just the sort of thing that would appeal to him), although sadly those seem to be discontinued and out of stock.
I'm going to hazard a guess that your husband will need a plus size tight due to height? You might just find them via that link. Or . . . you might go blind from the choices. *g*
Thank you for the links to the poulaine site and your prior post. Since I won't be trying for "authenticity," I can have fun figuring out some ideal fabric for my situation. Heavy polar fleece with some sort of non-skid sole would probably be ideal for me, as we've got hardwood floors that can be a bit slippery.
I just happen to have an old pair of socks and a large roll of duct tape . . .
How elfin! And I see that's what he intended, lol.
I've been getting tights at Target lately - I found a nice black, and a wonderful orange. Just check the sizes and what they have in stock - maybe they'd have a wonderful stripy pair! Oh, too, make sure that you check the rise - annoyingly enough, a number of them are "low rise" lately . . . bah.
He did a nice job - and yes, for anything one wraps around a body, gotta include extra for ease/movement. Yup.
Fun to see the "duct tape double" used for FEET! I've just used it for torso mannequins. Have to try it. :)
It's really fun being married to someone who's got such a sense of humor and style. :) My first husband would have dismissed this as frivolous, I'm sure.
Target's a good place to check, but I think I'll try to find some tights made for men, either dance wear, or for the recreationist crowd, as I think they'll fit him better and be more comfortable. His birthday is coming up soon, so it'll be the perfect opportunity to get him something he wouldn't normally get for himself. The Renaissance Store (http://www.renstore.com/index.asp) has a storefront shop here and I know they've carried them in the past, so that's one place to check, and there are lots of dance supply stores online.

Yes! I haven't even made a mannequin, although I've thought of it. I'll probably wait until a couple of the kids move out, though, in hopes of being able to have a dedicated sewing room where it will be safe from the critters. Right now, all my sewing stuff is in my bedroom, where it takes up far too much space and has been buried under clutter--no, I'm not a good housekeeper, why do you ask? :>
Frivolous, smivolous! At any rate, if you ever want to make a pair for him in the real medieval way, I'd be happy to get the directions to you from a historical garb text I have. It actually doesn't look too hard, once you get the measurements. *smirk*
Have hubby help you if you do the duct tape mannequin, so you can just wear yourself out holding your arms out for half an hour or so (seriously) while he tapes you up - and use a really large plastic bag, instead of ruining an old (and unfortunately stretchy) t-shirt, the way they usually recommend. Make sure you get partway up the neck, and a little down the arms, too. Gives you leeway in doing stuff later. Some people do a lower half one, too, for pants and such. Not a bad idea, at any rate.
Meanwhile, I'm staying away from those fun tights websites *urge to buy, eep!* lest I purchase something (those harlequin ones are just grand!). ;D
I'd love to have the directions to make him medieval tights. Although I'll make no promises about when these might happen. I've noticed that patterns for the tights (by whatever name, hosen is one I've seen, but there's another term for the separated leg sleeves held up with garters, isn't there?) seem to be few and far between, even on the costuming sites.
Thanks for the hint about the mannequin. This reminds me that one of the sites with instructions mentioned how hot one gets during the wrapping process. *makes note: don't do this in summer*
