pameladlloyd: Alya, an original character by Ian L. Powell (UFO over desert)

Hi, All! I haven't been posting much as I've been busy putting together a new writerly webpage, as my existing page is slanted toward my technical writing persona. My next task will be to update the old technical-writing-persona website. I'm thinking of renaming the old site and snagging that site name for my new fiction-writer site, as I think it works better there and I've come up with something I think will work for my corporate-type persona. Besides improving the look and feel of my website, one of my primary goals is to bring them up-to-date in terms of HTML and CSS, so they are compliant with today's standards.

One small annoyance that came up as I was putting together links to my various online presences (I'm on LinkedIn, GoodReads, and Elance, in addition to LiveJournal): I was going to have a section on my Links page for each of these and with the single exception of LiveJournal, all of these sites offer "widgets," which are in this context, icons linked to my identity within that site, that I can place on my webpage. I wanted a similar widget for LiveJournal, but my searches through the LJ support pages have turned up nothing. I tried googling for an LJ widget, but all I got were either widgets for other sites, designed to be added to LJ, or widgets that will stream random LJ news, and similar stuff. It seems strange to me that there isn't a dedicated LJ widget. After all, all I'd need would be an image of the LJ pencil with a link back to my site. I could even create one myself, but I hesitate to use the LJ pencil icon without explicit permission from LJ. Am I missing something (which is probably really obvious), or is this something LJ just doesn't do?

Note: I've submitted a question to LJ Support, but as there are over 1000 open questions (over 700 unanswered), I don't expect an answer in the very near future.

In my experience with LJ support, they do get back to you, so maybe they'll have an answer. It's a very reasonable question! Maybe it'll prompt someone to make a widget if they don't already have one.

I'm sure they do get back to people; I'm just not sure on what time scale. Mostly, I was just grumbling because I didn't get what I wanted. Petty, who moi? ;->

Let's see who gets back first: LJ to you or the financial aid department of the school my daughter's off to this fall, to me. Grrr.

I hate dealing with financial aid offices. Darn it, when I was in college, financial aid actually helped people out, or, hmmm, there was that little glitch when I got married and moved out of my parents home: no income (until I got a couple of part-time jobs), but I wasn't eligible because my parents had supported me the year before.

Argh, where be the real pirates, when ye be needing 'em?

But, at this point, we have five people in the immediate family (including my husband and myself, as we started dating while we were both returning students) who've received financial aid in the recent past. The sum total of what we owe is not to be thought of, and the interest rates applied to our loans are considerably higher than those I had to deal with back in the late 70s and early 80s.

Good luck with your interactions with them. Oh, and see if you can find some scholarships. They're out there, you just have to be really, really good at hunting for treasure.

Fortunately my other daughter has told me she's going to become a highwayman, so at least *she's* set :-)

My oldest really likes pirates; I think he'd be happy if we had Talk Like a Pirate Day every week. He even talked me into sewing him a linen shirt with ruffles, so he could dress the part. *g*

Although, when he applied for a position at a local chain of game stores and he came to the question, Pirate, or Ninja, his answer was something along the lines of "Space Pirate Ninja, avast and aloft, matey." (I'm paraphrasing, as I don't remember exactly what he told me, but yes, that was an actual question on the form.)

I like "avast and aloft"--I'll have to remember that.

It seems appropriate for a space pirate, although my son probably also managed to squeeze something appropriately Japanese and ninja-like into his actual comment. Especially since he took Japanese in high school and college.
